Our PE Curriculum

At Green Lane Infant School, we use a unique child-centred approach that encourages our children to develop a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity and lead a confident and healthy life. Our skills-based curriculum offers our children the opportunity to practise fundamental movement skills which are the building blocks for future activity and equips them with the tools needed to compete successfully in a range of sports and games.

Our PE curriculum is designed to have threshold concepts which are weaved throughout every group to ensure that our children have opportunities to develop secure fundamental movement skills and challenge themselves. We aim to promote our children’s ‘whole self’ through the multi-ability social and emotional cogs which are built on progressively throughout each year group. Our goal is to empower our children to be resilient, independent learners who are confident to take risks and reflect and improve on their own and each other’s successes. At Green Lane, healthy competition against self, a partner and team games is weaved throughout every year group and equips children with an understanding of winning and losing and teaches the importance of resilience and courage to have a go.  Having fun, being creative and developing positive memories of PE are key to our curriculum. We believe that every child can succeed within their own ability.

In order to inspire our children to lead an active life and keep themselves healthy, we encourage them to embed what they have learnt within PE lessons throughout their school day and beyond.

We have combined approaches to develop our PE curriculum using The National Curriculum and the scheme Real PE. This ensures that units are in line with our school approach of a skill-driven curriculum. Our children take part in two discrete PE lessons a week taught by our trained class teachers and our specialist sports coach. The threshold concepts are at the core of every lesson and are revisited throughout and across year groups so that children can achieve strength in the fundamental movement skills: agility, balance and co-ordination and have the confidence to apply these in range of sports, activities and games. These include tennis, cricket, dodgeball, bench ball, athletics and dance. Each half term, our children are introduced to one of our multi-ability social and emotional cogs: personal, social, cognitive, creative, applying physical, health and fitness. Each new cog is embedded across the unit of work and built on in the next year group so that our children become confident, active and independent learners.

Our curriculum enriches the cultural capital of our children and provides opportunities for them to apply their fundamental movement skills through a variety of team sports and inter sports competitions. Our children are encouraged to challenge themselves and have some autonomy over their own learning by being given the opportunity to deepen their mastery of each fundamental movement skill through delivery of levelled skills videos in each PE lesson taught.

Our PE curriculum has been carefully planned based on the principle of cognitive load theory, in which one key skill is taught over a 3 week period to minimise cognitive overload and allow for skills to be embedded into long term memory. Newly learned skills are interleaved amongst the curriculum enhancements and our fusion warm-ups include repetition and retrieval of previously learnt skills to support our children in developing their physical literacy.

Our after-school clubs, which are led by our sports coach, provide further opportunities for our children to apply what they have learnt to competitive sports. (add in lunchtimes including pupil voice when appropriate).

At the beginning of each unit, our children have opportunities to demonstrate their personal skills base within the fundamental movement skills (threshold concepts). This informs the programme of study, and ensure that lessons are relevant and take account of children’s different starting points.

Throughout the year, teachers use on-going assessment opportunities to inform children’s personal next steps and gauge whether children have mastered the fundamentals of each unit. Teachers constantly assess their children’s understanding of the multi-ability cogs and support them to develop this further.
We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:

• Assessing of children’s personal ability within our skills progression at the start and end of each unit
• Summative assessment, through the use of assessment activities
• Images and videos of the children’s practical learning including Seesaw
• Interviewing the pupils about their learning (pupil voice)
• Annual reporting to parents of standards across the curriculum
• (Add summative assessment wheels when these are introduced: milestones used to assess FUNS and COGS)

There are many free adventure play parks in Leicester that are Ofsted inspected and provide indoor and outdoor activities that include games, dance, sports and other activities that are not sport related including arts and crafts and computer games. They run holiday play schemes too.
