Our Music Curriculum
- Intent
- Implementation
- Impact
At Green Lane Infant School our aim is to provide a music curriculum that will enable each and every child to build the knowledge to be critical and creative within music in order to develop their skills as young musicians. We will encourage children to develop an enjoyment and sense of positive wellbeing through a shared love of singing, composing and performing, and provide children with as many opportunities as possible to perform in front of an audience.
We will expose children to carefully selected, diverse musical experiences to build an awareness of different musical traditions and genres and promote creativity, imagination and enjoyment of music whilst at Green Lane.
‘Music is a universal language that embodies the highest forms of creativity’ (The National Curriculum)
Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” – Plato
Our music curriculum is centred around a scheme created by Leicestershire Music Hub which is structured through the units: Pulse, Voice, Pitch, Technology, Form and Structure and 20th Century Music which are revisited in each year group. Our children have opportunities to make and link learning through our key concepts in music which are: performing singing, performing with instruments, improvising and exploring, composing, listening and appraising. Using the scheme as a tool, We plan lesson and activities to build upon our children’s prior learning, giving all children the opportunity to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding. Key vocabulary is mapped progressively and revisited so our children know and remember more and apply this vocabulary in a range of contexts.
Each unit of work comprises strands of musical learning which correspond with the National Curriculum for music, the EYFS framework 2021 and the Model Music Curriculum.
Within our whole class teaching, children experience a broad range of musical opportunities with regards to appraising, composing and performing with their voices and tuned and untuned instruments. They explore a wide range of music through our music spine which ensures that children are introduced to a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres.
As well as this, a love of music is promoted through performances, music assemblies and after-school clubs to include all of these skills.
Opportunities to perform to their own class, whole school or within our local environment ensure our children understand the significance and place of music within the wider world and that these excite and inspire children’s thirst for knowledge and participation in the subject and foster a deep sense of well-being. Music offers lifelong opportunities for the development of imagination, sensitivity, inventiveness, risk-taking and enjoyment. Musical activity, alone or with others, contributes to our children’s developing creativity and self-esteem.
We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:
- Formative assessing of children’s understanding of key knowledge and skills (including vocabulary) using the Leicestershire Music Hub assessments
- Summative assessment, through the use of video evidence at the beginning and end of each unit, saved on Seesaw
- Ongoing images and videos of the children’s practical learning including Seesaw
- Interviewing the pupils about their learning (pupil voice)
- Annual reporting to parents of standards across the curriculum
- Use of target tracker to record and track assessment outcomes
